Twitter Twits and Internet Morons: In Defense of Jay Cutler
The hottest topic in sports today is Jay Cutler. As much as I hate to admit it, many supposed "Bears fans" completely turned on Cutler, calling him a wimp, a pussy, not even knowing much about the injury he suffered. Did Cutler play a crappy first half? Sure. But did he deserve the crap he caught for sitting out the second half when injured? No way. No way in hell. And the moronic tweets from some current and former NFL boneheads?
A major issue, of course, is that Cutler is just a different kind of guy. He disdains the media and tries to stay out of the limelight. He has rejected lucrative advertising opportunities. People talk about the sour look on his face. He is not a rah rah type of guy. But toughness? How can people even question it? He was sacked nine times in one half against the Giants. He was sacked 52 times during the regular season. Compare that to players like Eli or Peyton Manning, who were each sacked only 16 times each during the season!
Did Cutler ever whine, gripe, hang out his terrible and porous offensive line to dry? No, no, and no. He sucked it up and came back for more. He had 57 starts in a row before getting a concussion in the Giants game, causing him to miss one start, the next game against Carolina.
And this is not to even mention that Cutler has the added challenge of playing while managing Type 1 diabetes. And people question his toughness?
It kills me that all these fucking soft couch potatoes across the U.S. are quick to call Cutler a pussy. What a bunch of fucking life losers.
And everyone is a fucking doctor or expert on injuries. "I hurt my knee and I did stuff (or played)." Like they know the extent of Cutler's injury. Or would be able to play against a fierce NFL rush on a frigid field with a Super Bowl berth on the line.
And the NFL players? Calling out Cutler on Twitter? What a bunch of egomaniac asshats. Guys (Maurice Jones Drew) who missed games due to injury when their teams were fighting for playoff spots are taking shots at him. And showing such a lack of class and professionalism and lack of unity when the owners are wanting to crush them in the upcoming collective bargaining talks? Are they fucking stupid?
And how about Deion Sanders, the original Mr. Turf Toe, who missed almost two complete seasons worth of games because of his toe. Yeah, he was great on coverage, but he averaged only 2.6 tackles per game. Pussy stats. Shut the fuck up, egomaniac.
The Bears did not help the situation by saying that Cutler was questionable to return to the game. How about saying he is seriously injured and unable to return?
So now ... surprise -- we find out that Cutler has a grade 2 tear of his MCL. Sure -- play quarterback and try to pass when you can't plant your leg. He would have been worse than he was in the first half. The team doctors kept him out.
Strangely enough, if you couldn't tell, I kind of like Jay Cutler. He isn't your usual bozo jock. He doesn't kiss ass. He doesn't seem to give a crap what people say.
So ... all you faux Bears fans who immediately threw Cutler under the bus, all you know-nothing asshats in cyberspace who live for trolling discussion boards with worthless contributions, all you "experts" who formed stupid opinions without having any facts, and any of you stupid NFL players or former players who live to see your own uninformed drivel on Twitter --
GO SCREW YOURSELVES.

You're right, but appearances and track record count in this world.
If Cutler isn't such an emo-moper, if he does the usual "claphands, attaboy, supportiveteammate" sideline banter, if he's just another "good guy" like, oh, BigBen or OldManFavre, gack - then of course he doesn't get questioned.
Just the usual type of thing in a sport where no matter how flashy and chatty players are - there's a LOT of groupthink uniformity, a lot of lawnmowers trying to cut down the tallest blade of grass.
Everyone's better off crushing management for carrying such a scrub for a backup in Todd Collins that they had to break the glass for a third-stringer who almost pulled off a miracle.
They need to get him a true #1 receiver. Knox and Hester are medium at best.
I love your enthusiam and support for your team Light. Your a true fan and for that, I'll always admire you.
Do you Like-Like Cutler? LOL. I actually agree with you for the most part.. although I did think he should have been like on the sideline with the mic or something helping the kid out who they put in. It kind of gives the appearance that he does not care about the game even if that is not the case.
The closest to a Waffles-like rant I was able to do, unfortunately. Not enough venom. : o )
Yeah -- I understand the problem people have with Cutler. I think what I and many others are upset most about is that so many Bears fans who should know better about his toughness turned on him, and his fellow NFL players all felt the need to crap on him on Twitter.
Call him a jerk, say his body language portrays him in a bad light, but geez -- the guy took so much punishment the entire year and said not one word about it. His toughness is certainly not an issue in my mind.
Lightning,
Do you think if the exact same injury had happened in the exact same circumstance to, say, Ben Roethlisberger or Brett Favre, they would have gone out and played in the second half, or do you think they would have sat it out?
I think ultimately each person's answer to that question is what determines how someone reacts to all the Cutler business from this past weekend.
Good point, Hoy. The thing that the press never portrays is that Cutler has been a tough guy his whole career. Long string of starts until he got a concussion against the Giants. Look at his sack numbers for 2010 compared to the Manning brothers. This doesn't even take into account all the escaping he did each week. I watched almost every minute of every Bear game this season. Believe me, he got the crap beat out of him almost every week. No complaints from him.
I think it is really that he doesn't care about all this. Unfortunately, the spotlight is on him and he therefore comes off very badly. A change of attitude and some good p.r. would go a long way toward altering how people see him.
You didn't answer my question though. I'm curious if you think Big Ben or Favre would have sat out the second half under the exact same circumstances.
I do not know the answer to that question. In general, the perception for most people would probably be that either one of them would have gone into the game at any cost. The Cutler perception, however, is that he would not.
I cannot say how bad the situation was when it came to the essential functions of a quarterback. You have to remember that he did go into the game after being injured but then did not return.
Assuming that he could have returned (a big assumption in my mind) but would not have been able to run or plant to throw, what would be the more heroic decision -- go into the game and not be able to do the job, or allow someone who could do the functions to play?
I guess the one of the problems I have is that there is this perception that he was a wuss and did not care. After seeing him play all season, I view him as a tough, gutsy guy.
